Over Age Dependent Status

Aug 07, 2012

An employee’s children are covered under their employer’s group insurance policy for Extended Health & Dental and Dependent Life (if applicable) until they are no longer considered to be a dependent. The age that a child is no longer a dependent ranges from 18 to 22 depending on the carrier.  Once the dependent reaches the age of maturity, they are still eligible for coverage for Extended Health & Dental benefits as an  Over Age Dependent, providing they are attending an accredited school in or outside of Canada and covered under a provincial medical plan.  The Over age Dependent can be covered for Extended Health & Dental benefits up to the age of 25 or 26.

An Over age Dependent is also defined as a person who has reached the age of maturity, having no spouse, suffering from a functional impairment and living with the Employee or Spouse who has parental authority over him/her as if they were a minor.
