Why is There Need for a Wellness Program

Employee wellness is the new buzz word in the HR world because it can increase productivity in the workforce while reducing costs to an employer. But, what does wellness really mean and where do you start?

Employee wellness programs aim to promote and encourage employee health – both physically and mentally. The difficulty is that each program must be tailored to the specific workforce for it to be both effective and meaningful. One of our partners at TRG, the Employee Wellness Solutions Network, focuses solely on creating unique employee wellness programs (http://www.ewsnetwork.com/).

An alternative solution for employers who may be looking to create their own wellness programs is to take advantage of non-profit organizations’ promotions such as the Canadian Diabetes Association’s diabetes awareness month in November. If an employer is aware that diabetes is one of the top presenting issues in their drug claims, they can access resources through the Association that can be easily distributed and promoted to employees:

  • Website to risk questionnaire (dontberisky.ca)
  • Resources on risk factors
  • Information on the disease and other community resources
  • Recipes for healthier eating

There is a plethora of campaigns available through different associations from heart health (Heart and Stroke Foundation) to various types of cancer awareness.

Whether a wellness program is a uniquely tailored or they are wellness strategies aimed at the promotion of health and prevention of diseases, the benefits of having one warrants an employer’s consideration. However, please keep in mind that a successful program is one that is tailored to your employee demographics and their needs!
