Dental Fee Guide

Aug 19, 2015

Questions regarding the cost of dental treatment are among the most common inquiries dentists receive. The dental fee guide serves as a resource for dentists and insurance carriers to follow.

Annually produced by most provincial dental associations, the fee guide provides a list of suggested prices that dentists could charge for a particular treatment or service. However, it is not mandatory for dentists to follow this guide nor do all the provinces share a common set of guidelines for establishing the fees.

In BC, the cost of dental procedures are annually reviewed and revised by the British Columbia Dental Association (BCDA). In determining the fees to be included in the guide, the BCDA uses factors such as the inflation rate and labour costs. The result was an increase at 2.0% above 2014, effective February 1, 2015.

This year’s increases across Canada range from 1.53% in Ontario to 2.0% in B.C and Saskatchewan to 2.9% in Manitoba. The Alberta Dental Association, on the other hand, does not publish a fee guide.

Although dentists are not obligated to charge the suggested fees, many dentists do. When it comes to claim adjudication, virtually all insurance carriers rely on these guides to serve as a benchmark for appropriate fees.
